This past summer it was decided that our school
project was going to be creat and establish a business. Believe that
kids learn best hands on. So, the Tyler kids decided to make and
sell fleece blankets. They had to figure out where the start up cost
would come from, how much fleece to order, where to sell them and so
forth. Well, they had picked to market their blankets at our local
arts and craft show the beginning of Sept. Then Hurricane Katrina
hit the gulf area and the kids quickly turned their business into a
mission project. They now were going to collect donations at the
craft fair so they could make and deliver blankets to the gulf area.
They set a very large goal of 1200 blankets...and they have done a
great job working towards that goal. As of today, January 17 they
have sold, made and delivered 400 blankets to some very special kids
in the Baton Rouge area. Their next trip will be early Spring. They
hope to have another 400 to take to Biloxi, MS. They have build a
website and maintain it regularly, please visit it: www.kidscreatingcomfort.org. They got the Oprah magazine to do a story, it
was just released yesterday. They are on page 46, check it out as
well. These kids have worked very hard and we are very proud of
them. Please consider supporting their project. Make a donation now:
visit our online store and follow the Kids Creating Comfort link to make a donation.
Following is taken from their website early
November:
We couldn't be more proud of these kids than we
are today as I finish up their website! They sat down over two
months ago and brainstormed an idea to help make others feel happy,
safe and warm. They had big ideas-Oprah, they had small
ideas-flyers, they had fun ideas-be in a parade, they had not so fun
ideas-5000 flyers! But the thing is they had ideas! They've worked
hard on all of them;-sometimes with a smile and sometimes with a
frown- but still worked! Sometimes one has had to carry the load
while the others had sports. Sometimes one has had to step up and
say, " I'll do it"even if they hated to do it. They've worked
together as a team, as friends and as family! What more could
parents ask for? When asked what are they getting out of this here
is what they say:
1. A warm feeling that they can help someone
else.
2. A chance to show adults kids can start and
finish big ideas.
3. A chance to work with other "special" people
and make friends with them.
4. Raising money by just talking to
people.
5. Talking to adults that are really important
in a business and having them really listen to them and give them
what they are asking for.
6. The neat feeling inside when they see their
flyer posted in a store window.
7. Meeting people from around the world: The
Netherlands, Alaska and Nova
Scotia--neat they've even heard of
them.
8. Getting to run a business like a grown up:
business meetings at the local coffee shop, going over finances,
making important decisions that effect how well Kids Creating
Comfort does.
The Tyler kids are getting a lot more
out of this project than even their parents orginally thought they
would. They have always been great kids to us but now they are even
greater kids!
Please explore their site and check out the pictures of them hard at
work. If you have a minute drop them a line and just say "hi"! They
love to see mail in their mail box (snail mail and email). If you've already helped
reach one of their goals, thank you! If you haven't yet...maybe now
you'd like to? (Dad says always ask for the sale--and Dad knows
selling)
It cost about $20 to make and ship a blanket to
the Gulf area. However, we will take any donation you'd like to
send. We have Walmart, Kinkos, Office Max, Motivation Plus, and
Bernie's Unique Gifts who have all made very generous donations to
help us reach our goal. Would you please consider helping put a big
smile on the face of a sad child?
Thanks,
Josephine, Logan, Ben, Ryanne,
